" A expressão 'holding the baby' (segurar o bebê) tem um sentido preciso em inglês; alguém que o estava ajudando a fazer alguma coisa desapareceu, e você ficou "segurando o bebê". Por aí podemos ver que todos sabem que as mães têm, naturalmente, um senso de responsabilidade, e se estiverem com um bebê em seus braços estarão envolvidas de algum modo especial. É claro que algumas mulheres são deixadas literalmente "segurando o bebê", quando o pai não consegue gostar da parte que lhe cabe e não é capaz de dividir com a mulher a enorme responsabilidade que um bebê deve sempre representar" (Winnicott - Os bebês suas mães).
  "The phrase "holding the baby" has a definite meaning in the English language; someone was co-operating with you over something, and then walized off, and you were left "holding the baby". By this we can see that evereybody knows that mothers naturally have a sense of responsability, and if they have a baby in their arms they are involved in some special way. Of course, some women get left holding the baby literally, in the sense that the father is unable to enjoy the part he has to play, and unable to share with the mother the great responsability which a baby must always be to someone."
